Solving Equations with Grouping Symbols (Jump to: Lecture | Video )

Imagine you have an equation that has variables on both sides:

4x = 2(x + 6)

This equation can be solved using the properties of equality we already know.

Our goal is to get a single x on its own. First, we apply the distributive property to simplify the right side of the equation:

4x = 2x + 12

Next, we subtract 2x from each side:

2x = 12

Next, we dicide each side by 2

x = 6
